Iota Homeroom, plans for July 8-10

 

Here are some of our activities for the first few days of class.  We’ll see use it until we are ready to go on, which may be one day, or four.

 

I.  Housekeeping and introduction (monitor off)

Introduce the members of the group

Class procedures

            Timeliness

            Signing in and out

            Breaks—10 minutes at the end of each hour

            Red cups used to get attention

            Stipend given partially at end of summer, rest after use of WebQuest in school

            Follow-up sessions during the year

What the class has in store

            Upgrading basic computer skills

            Upgrading email skills

            Upgrading skills in using the internet

                        Browsing, searching, using data bases, evaluating sites

            Learning elementary skills in image processing

            Learning to create web pages using Netscape Composer

            Learning to publish and/or store material on Internet Servers

                        Using FTP

                        Using Composer publishing system

            Creating and use a WebQuest

IV.       Getting Started with the Computer (rf. Module “Computer Basics”)

            Mentor describes Getting Started with the computer using projector

            Turning on and off

            Mouse:  left and right clicks; selecting; drag and drop

            Desktop

            Windows (expanding, contracting, canceling)

            Using menus

            Explain hard disk, floppy disk and CD structure on computer

            Folders and files defined (rf. module “Files and Folders”)

                        File structure

                        Creating folders

                        Moving, copying and deleting files and folders (on hard disk and to floppies)

            Start Button—Program Files, Search,

            Shortcut on Desktop

            Creating and saving documents (use Word for example)

            Deleting, copying and moving documents

Participants start computers, examine desktop, try a search, open Word, create a shortcut for Word or other program

            Use right and left mouse clicks

V.  Introducing the concept of the Internet and the WWW (rf. Module

            Communicating between computers through servers

            Web of servers

            Addresses

            Downloading pages, files, programs

            Types of communication

                        Web pages

                        Email   

                        Chat rooms and instant messenging

                        Peer to peer transfer

       Discuss with the class “Why use the Internet in Teaching” (rf. Module “Using the Internet in the Classroom”)

 

VI.  Introduction to concept of browsers (rf. Module “Using a Browser”)

            Show similarities and differences among Netscape, Internet Explorer and AOL browsers

       Participants find browsers in program files, make desktop shortcuts of Navigator and IE, practice with web addresses, going back and forward, clicking links,

VII.  Mentors talk about search engines, demonstrate basics of searching.

VIII.  Mentors demonstrate Bookmarks (Navigator) and Favorites (IE)

                        Saving bookmarks for use on other computers.
